Wed & Thurs, Aug 16-17: Go over syllabus & class expectations, discuss "How to Build a Dog" article, turn in homework on article. Review Scientific Method in groups. (Per F&G) begin "Parts of an Experiment" in groups. Homework: Letter of intro due Fri, 8/18 Per B, Mon, 8/21 Per F & H, open bioscimethnotes above and read and/or copy the first 3 pages into your notebooks or binders.
Fri, Aug 18 & Mon, Aug 21: Go over first 3 pages of scimethodnotes in class. Work in groups on "Parts of an Experiment" (begin & finish this activity Per B, finish this activity Per F&H) , class discussion of parts of an experiment, give out reference sheet about lab reports, begin class problem "Does exercise affect the heart rate of 16-17 year old females?" Homework: Five facts on heart rate, think about how you would do this experiment.
Tues, Aug 22 (Per B) & Wed, Aug 23 (Per F&H): Design and carry out heart rate experiment, collect data. Homework: Put all class resting HR and HR after exercise into a data table using excel. Find the mean, median, mode, and range for each column and place on the data table, make a graph for your personal recovery heart rates, giving the slope and answering the questions.
Thurs, Aug 24 (Per B) & Mon, Aug 28 (Per F&H): Turn in HR recovery graph & questions. We will take a statistical look at the heart rate data, discussing mean, median, mode, and range for each column and beyond, going over biostatistics notes above. Homework: Make a data table and graph including all 3 classes' data, find mean, range, SD, and CI for each class and read Chpt 1.

Tues, Aug 29 (B) & Wed, Aug 30 (F&H): Go over HR lab report instructions, how to put error bars on graphs, go over graphing homework, finish scientific method notes on types of experimentation. Homework: Look over bad science info, work on Heart Rate Lab Report due Tues, 9/5 (B) & Wed, 9/6 (F&H), graphing quiz next class.
Thus, Aug 31 (B) & Fri, Sept 1 (F&H): Graphing Quiz, 50 minutes: given a problem and data, be able to determine the question/problem, hypothesis, IV, DV, control group, exp gap, organize data into a table and graph by hand not excel. Work on HR lab reports. Homework: work on heart rate lab report.
Tues, Sept 5 (B) & Wed, Sept 6 (F&H): Heart Rate Lab Report due. Wrap up Unit 1 with notes & discussion on hypotheses, laws, theories, & pseudoscience. Discuss root words, characteristics of life and levels of organization. Homework: Root word worksheet, read microscope lab.
